  • Does this mean I need to see a Dentist as well?
No, not necessarily. A dental hygienist will advise you of any suspected problems identified during your dental hygiene examination and can refer you if required. Smart Dental Hygiene accepts all clients/ the public without a referral. Simply call the Absolute Health and Wellness Centre to speak with a receptionist that can find a convenient date and time for your visit. Independent Dental Hygiene services are now available to the public in Ontario. Bill 171 passed September 2007 giving you direct access to dental hygiene services without having to see the dentist. Read more under 'About' on the website.
  • Is my personal information secure?
Personal information is collected in accordance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act for the purposes of providing dental hygiene treatment, referals to healthcare professionals and for insurance purposes. Smart Dental Hygiene, its employees, agents and volunteers are required to adhere to this Privacy Policy, which is based on the privacy principles set out in the federal statute, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Ontario statute, the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA).
  • Does my dental insurance cover me?
Dental Hygienists are healthcare professionals and will refer you if a suspected problem is identified. A dental hygienist must only work within his/her scope of practice (within their skill, knowledge and legal capability). Remember, a dental hygienists' focus is to work with you to prevent problems such as cavities and gum disease before they begin.
  • How much does it cost?
Individual needs are different and the fee reflects the treatment being provided and the time required to perform them. Visit our Services & Fees page on the website for more information. Smart Dental Hygiene is guided by the current suggested fee guide from The Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association which is typically 30-50% less than a traditional dental office.
  • How soon can I get an appointment?
Smart Dental Hygiene works hard to provide flexible hours and appointment times to accommodate your busy schedule. Smart Dental Hygiene is open Monday to Saturday with evening appointments available. Weekday, daytime hours available at request. Call us to arrange a time that is convenient for you.
  • How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
The dental hygienist will asses the condition of your mouth and will personalize the frequency of your visits. Clients with periodontal disease and health issues are recommended to be seen more often while clients with good oral health and no health concerns usually it is recommended to be seen every 6-9 months. If you have a special event and are interested in a cosmetic cleaning and/or whitening in between your regular preventive hygiene schedule, perhaps we can assist you.
  • What happens if I have a cavity?
Dental Hygienists are healthcare professionals and will refer you if a suspected problem is identified. A dental hygienist must only work within his/her scope of practice (within their skill, knowledge and legal capability). Remember, a dental hygienists' focus is to work with you to prevent problems such as cavities and gum disease before they begin.
  • Do you take x-rays?
At this time dental hygienists in an independent practice are not regulated to take dental x-rays. Smart Dental Hygiene does not have x-ray radiation in the office.
  • When should I take my child for their first dental hygiene appointment?
Children should have their first visit to a dental office between ages 1-2 years, or earlier if you have any concerns. We offer first happy visits at no charge for children who have never visited a dental office or who may be anxious to visit. This would involve a tour, meeting the dental hygienist, and maybe even a chair ride if they want!
  • Do you use latex and gluten-free products in your office?
Smart Dental Hygiene uses non latex and powder free gloves and products that do not contain latex or gluten.
  • Do you use fluoride?
Fluoride comes in many forms and it is very important to know what type of fluoride could be beneficial to your teeth in only specific situations. Fluoride is a naturally occurring trace mineral found in various amounts in soil and water; much like copper and iron. Too much iron, copper, or fluoride is harmful, the right amount could be helpful. Smart Dental Hygiene does not support (systemic) swallowing fluoride (fluoridated drinking water) for the benefit of your teeth. However, (topical) fluoride varnish applied directly to the tooth can be extremely helpful in re-mineralizing softened enamel (early cavities), preventing cavities, and reducing sensitive teeth due to recession (shrinking gums and root exposure). Fluoride varnish soaks into the enamel directly where it is applied and can be very effective in only certain therapeutic situations. This is based not only on evidence based scientific research, but my own clinical and personal experiences. Our goal is to provide prevention-based dental hygiene therapy with as much focus on holistic and natural methods as possible. Let's talk about whether fluoride varnish is a right choice for you.
